18TH NEWTOWNABBEY OB 1

SCOTT Majury’s second-half goal last Saturday earned Bangor Amateurs their first league win since August 13.

A reversal of the previous fixture when the Amateurs were beaten 2-1, the home side gave a debut to Mackenzie Gray and were asking questions of their visitors early on with Jack Shaw firing over after five minutes before Jack Ennis sent a shot wide from a Raul Zabrauteanu corner.

The Amateurs would however go behind after the quarter-hour when the referee adjudged captain Stuart Beattie to have committed a foul in the area and Owen Downing found the bottom left corner with his spot kick.

It was also from the penalty spot that TJ Young’s side drew level. Three minutes before half-time Beattie was brought down following a corner and the former Ards Rangers man kept his nerve from 12 yards.

Only a great double save from Amateurs ’keeper Ewan Smyth after that ensured his side didn’t go into the interval trailing.

The second half was much less eventful, with the pivotal moment arriving 14 minutes from time when Scott Majury picked out the bottom corner from 25 yards, to the joy of the large home support.

Man of the match: Jack Shaw.

The seconds were involved in a local derby away at Bangor Swifts and won 3-2 thanks to goals from David Grierson (2) and Joel Hunter.
