NORTH Down Women produced a powerful 57-24 win against Lurgan on Sunday afternoon which not only restored some pride for the Upritchard Park faithful, but also went some way to avenging the men’s defeat by Lurgan the day before.
With Lurgan unable to field a complete team, the result was already awarded to North Down Women ahead of the opening kick-off. However, in the spirit of ‘Let’s Play Rugby’ both sides agreed that the game should go ahead nonetheless. With both teams’ players evened up, the game got underway and it soon became obvious that this would be a competitive encounter with no quarter given by either side.
Despite playing into a stiff headwind, North Down Women produced some powerful carries and determined running to ease into a 29-12 lead at half-time. Although Lurgan had fast wingers who managed to get some breakaway tries, overall North Down Women had the better build-ups and support play, coupled with their own quick runners.
In the end, this proved too much for the visitors and the hosts went on to run in four more second-half tries to finish as convincing 57-24 winners.
