A special boxing show took place in Bangor at the weekend. Bangor Abbey Boxing Academy staged a show in St Comgall’s Parish Centre on Saturday to mark the formation of the club 28 years ago by head coach, Sandy Rice. The event was also run in memory of former member, Jake McCoubrey, who sadly passed away last year. Jake’s father, Damien McCoubrey, was presented with a memorial plaque in his son’s memory by Sandy Rice. The show consisted of 13 very competitive bouts with Academy members up against a selection of boxers from across the province and also some boxers from London. At the interval the Mayor of Ards and North Down, Mark Brooks, presented Sandy Rice with a Mayoral certificate to acknowledge his 28 years of service to boxing within the community. Sandy was unaware of this presentation and was very grateful that the Mayor was able to attend. The boxing club would like to thank South Eastern Regional College and their staff for the support they have shown to the club through the Covid19 pandemic.
