A YOUNG Bangor footballer has been selected for the Co Down squad at this year’s SuperCupNI.

Lewis Halliday is a central midfielder and a key player in the seasiders 2010 Academy team which next season will play in the top division of The National league. 

Lewis is one of 18 boys selected from across the County who make up this year’s squad hoping to do well in what is Northern Ireland’s elite youth tournament which is being held from July 22-26 at venues across the North Coast.

This year’s invitational tournament includes the top players from the youth academies from a host of premier clubs.

Former Northern Ireland captain Aaron Hughes was on hand to conduct the draw, which has attracted entrants from across the world and includes household names including Manchester United, Aston Villa, Rangers, Celtic and West Ham United.

Lewis has been at Bangor FC youth academy since its inception five years ago and continues to progress in a team which now play at the highest level in N. Ireland.

The head of Bangor’s Youth Academy, Jeff Montgomery, is delighted that Lewis’ talent is being tested against the best players of his age at the SuperCupNI.

“Lewis is a super talent but his work ethic and commitment to Bangor and his teammates, week in week out, makes me even more delighted that he has been selected for Co. Down this year,” he said.

“I have no doubt he will play a key role in their squad and hopefully they can bring some silverware back to Co. Down”

The County Down Junior team (U14) have been drawn in group B along with Charlton Athletic, Celtic and Co. Armagh. And the other groups include teams from Blackburn rovers Rangers and West ham United.

The County Down Premier team (U16) are in Group C of their section and will face  West Cork Academy, Barca Academy Dubai and Toluca FC from Spain.

The tournament kicks off on Monday, July 22, where Co. Down will face County Armagh, the following day they face Charlton Athletic and finish up the group with a mouth-watering game on Wednesday, July 24 against last year’s winners Celtic.
