A REMARKABLE sporting moment unfolded at Craigmillar Park Golf Club in Scotland when 89-year-old Bangor golfer Raymond Pitt finally achieved every golfer’s dream with his first-ever hole-in-one.
Visiting family in Edinburgh, Raymond joined his nephew, Edwin Backler, and great-nephews Tom and Alex Backler for a casual round, and what began as a relaxed outing quickly turned into a day none of them will ever forget.
Stepping up to the 11th tee, Raymond selected his trusted 7-wood and struck a confident shot. Watching the ball clear a challenging bunker, he appeared satisfied and casually bent down to retrieve his tee, unaware of the drama still unfolding ahead.
Behind him, however, Edwin, Tom and Alex stood frozen, eyes glued to the ball as it landed cleanly on the green. What followed stunned them, as the ball rolled with purpose, towards the hole and dropped in.
Cheers rang out across the course as the trio celebrated wildly, leaving Raymond momentarily puzzled by the sudden commotion. However, confusion quickly gave way to disbelief, and then pure joy, as the news reached him.
At 89 years and 205 days old, Raymond had finally achieved the elusive feat that had evaded him for a lifetime.
The excitement did not stop there either. With the 11th hole overlooked by the clubhouse, fellow golfers and spectators quickly joined the celebration. Staff from the club appeared with drinks, courtesy of Stewart Brewing, adding a festive touch to
the occasion.
Club professional Alan Wright marked the moment by presenting Raymond with a commemorative gift, ensuring the achievement will be remembered long after the final putt.
