FORTY two years ago Niall McAlister and Peter Reid were part of the all conquering Bangor Grammar School hockey team that swept all before them.

The team won the Burney Cup, the McCullough Cup and the Ulster Schools indoor title, with Niall and Peter playing key roles throughout the campaigns.

The two haven’t played hockey since, but last week they were both part of the Ireland over-60s team that competed in the World Hockey Masters European Championships held at Nottingham University.

They played six matches across nine days, in very hot weather, narrowly losing a semi-final to eventual winners England, despite Niall finding the net. Niall and Peter did not come away empty handed however, outplaying a strong German team in the third/fourth place play-off to win 3-0 and pick up a bronze medal.
