SENIOR LEAGUE 2
BANGOR LADIES 3
RAINEY LADIES 2
BANGOR Ladies came from behind to earn a thrilling victory from their clash with Rainey on Saturday thanks to two goals in the final quarter.
Under the lights at the Aurora, the first half was a balanced affair with both teams battling hard but unable to break the deadlock.
The action intensified in the third quarter and it was a fantastic counter-attack that saw Bangor seize the initiative. Brooke Stranaghan’s surging run up the pitch carved through Rainey’s defence and Zoe Stewart finished expertly to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
Rainey quickly responded with an equalising goal from a penalty corner and then struck again to turn the game on its head.
Refusing to give in under the pressure, Bangor rallied together in the final quarter. A penalty corner opportunity won by Hannah Grant was converted by Nessie Monaghan, whose composed strike brought the home side level at 2-2.
With the game hanging in the balance and all to play for, Grant was on hand to capitalise from another penalty corner as she restored Bangor’s lead. Rainey pressed hard in the closing minutes and were awarded a penalty corner of their own, but Bangor’s defence held strong to see out the win.
It was a well-earned three points for the home side, who showed resilience and team spirit when it mattered most. This weekend Bangor face CI away in a cup fixture.
Player of the match: Nessie Monaghan.
