HELEN’S Bay is set to make a splash once again as hardy swimmers dust off their festive togs for the 29th annual Christmas Eve dip.
The long-running tradition, which first began in 1997, returns this year with a full morning of music, community spirit and chilly cheer.
Festivities kick off at 10.30am when the Helen’s Bay Singers serenade the beach with Christmas carols. Once local bagpiper Sean McLaughlin strikes up at 11am, it’s the signal for hundreds to charge into the ‘baltic’ waters.
Organisers Helens Baywatch are encouraging swimmers and spectators to dig deep, with all donations going to Dementia NI and Air Ambulance NI. Both charities hold special meaning for supporters.
Jill Lowry said: “Dementia NI have been a huge help to me after our mum’s diagnosis of Dementia in 2021. Their signposting to assistance was particularly helpful, and their website is fantastic for understanding the diagnosis and what it means going forward. It meant that I was better informed and could get my mum the assistance she needed.”
Fellow dipper Gail O’Brien added: “I think a lot of people don’t even realise the Air Ambulance NI is a charity and not part of the NHS.
“I currently owe them one very priceless uncle. Having our amazing Air Ambulance means that more people are saved and have better outcomes after accidents.
“I think they deserve so much support, and am super happy they are one of our chosen charities for our Christmas dip this year. Come and support us and them on Christmas Eve.”
Those wishing to donate in advance can do so via JustGiving, with funds sent directly to each charity.
