A £170,000 transformation of Groomsport’s play park has been officially unveiled, with local schoolchildren taking centre stage after helping to design many of the new attractions.
Pupils from Ballyholme Primary School joined the Mayor of Ards and North Down, Craig Blaney, to open the refurbished facility following a major investment to create a modern, inclusive space for local families.
The project placed young people at the heart of the design process. Pupils from Ballyholme primary took part in a series of engagement sessions where they viewed proposed plans, learned about different types of play equipment, asked questions and voted for their preferred options.
Their feedback helped shape the final layout of the park, ensuring it reflected the interests and needs of the children who will use it most.
During the sessions, pupils expressed particular enthusiasm for interactive and energetic play features, including an in-ground trampoline and musical play equipment, both of which have been incorporated into the finished development.
Following the completion of the works, the children were invited back to the site to see how their ideas had been brought to life and to enjoy the new facilities.
Mayor Blaney, said it was fantastic to see the newly refurbished play park officially open and already being enjoyed by local children and families.
“This investment has created a modern, inclusive space that the whole community can be proud of,” he said. “I’m especially pleased that local children played such an important role in shaping its design – this is a wonderful example of how involving young people can make a real difference.
“Their ideas have helped bring this space to life, ensuring it will be enjoyed for many years to come.”
Council officials said the project demonstrates the value of involving children in community developments and highlights how young people’s views can help create welcoming public spaces.
The refurbished play area provides enhanced opportunities for outdoor play, physical activity and social interaction, representing a significant investment in the wellbeing of the local community.
The development also included new safety surfacing made from Nike Grind recycled rubber. Created using recycled material from the manufacture of Nike trainers, each square metre contains the equivalent of around 24 pairs of worn-out sports shoes, helping to give new life to resources that might otherwise go to waste.
