ARDS and North Down Borough Council has announced a new partnership with Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland, reinforcing its commitment to supporting local athletes on the international stage ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The partnership will support Team NI’s preparations for the Glasgow Games and build on a long-standing relationship with the borough, whose athletes, coaches and support staff have made a significant contribution to Northern Ireland’s success.
Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Craig Blaney, said: “This partnership between Ards and North Down Borough Council and Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland highlights our belief in the power of sport to inspire and deliver real impact.
“By backing Team NI, we’re investing in local talent and building a lasting legacy of opportunity and ambition in our communities.”
The Council’s investment in Team NI supports athletes competing at the highest level, while delivering real impact at home.
By backing elite sport, the partnership builds civic pride, shines a spotlight on local talent and inspires the next generation to get involved.
This approach aligns closely with the Borough’s recently-launched ‘Getting Active, Staying Active’, which aims to create more opportunities for active leisure — anything that involves exercise — so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle.
As preparations for Glasgow 2026 continue, several athletes from Ards and North Down are competing, representing their clubs and communities with pride.
Their achievements continue to inspire the next generation and reinforce the Borough’s reputation as a centre of sporting excellence.
