THE public is being warned to be vigilant after the appearance of a poisonous plant on Ballyholme beach.
Hemlock Water Dropwort, also known as dead man’s fingers, was found washed up on the beach on Thursday. It is very common along waterways, is highly toxic and has been known to cause both human and animal poisoning.
The council’s warning comes after the recent death of a pet dog who ingested an unknown toxin at Ballyholme, however it is not confirmed as being the result of the the plant.
A council spokesperson said as there is ‘naturally occurring algae’ as well as ‘seaweeds that regularly wash up on our beaches that can be toxic to dogs’, they advised all dog owners to take care when in the area.
“We encourage the public to be vigilant when walking on our beaches, particularly with young children and dogs. Please keep a watchful eye, making sure they don’t eat anything they shouldn’t,” the spokesperson said.
