THE reading talents of the pupils at St Patrick’s Primary School in Holywood has earned the school an award.
The pupils won the ReadOn campaign which is organised by the Cancer Fund for Children and CoolFM and designed to encourage children to read as much as possible while raising money for the charity.
This year the charity collaborated with CoolFM to run the competition where the prize was for one lucky school to receive a special visit from Rebecca McKinney, the CoolFM breakfast show host, and Ollie the Owl, the mascot of the ReadOn campaign.
Talking about the visit, the Schools and Youth Fundraiser with Cancer Fund for Children, Rebecca Oates, said the staff and students at St. Patrick’s Primary School are avid supporters of the ReadOn campaign.
“We are absolutely delighted that we were able to mark their efforts with such a fun visit,” she said. “ This is the 25th year of ReadOn and we are so grateful to Rebecca McKinney and Wee Critters for coming on board to help us make this year’s activity extra special.”
“Schools across Northern Ireland love getting behind this initiative as it allows them to encourage reading in pupils while also raising money for a worthy cause.”
Every week in Northern Ireland, roughly around three children and young people are unfortunately diagnosed with cancer. The money that the ReadOn initiative raises lets Cancer Fund for Children provide support for these children, young people, and their families.
ReadOn was sponsored by EUROSPAR and VIVOXTRA NI this year, who’ve been long-term supporters since 2011 and raising a whopping £1.8m.
