THE dedication and enthusiasm of the many volunteers involved in Donaghadee in Bloom were celebrated at a special event recently.

Organised by the Donaghadee Community Development Association (DCDA), and sponsored by Alan and Ann Couser of Ace Tours, Tuesday’s event was held in Meadowbank Social and Recreation Club.Thanking the volunteers, Alison Taylor, DCDA volunteer co-ordinator, said the project is about more than just flowers and landscaping.“It’s about pride in our town, community spirit, and a shared belief that we can make Donaghadee an even more beautiful place to live, work, and visit,” said Alison.“None of it would be possible without the countless hours of hard work, creativity, and dedication that our volunteers so generously give. Whether you’ve been planting, weeding, watering, or simply offering words of encouragement, your contribution matters. “You have transformed our streets, parks and green spaces, creating a welcoming and vibrant environment for residents and visitors alike. Your efforts bring colour and joy to our town, and the impact of your work extends far beyond what the eye can see. “You are the heart and soul of Donaghadee in Bloom, and we are incredibly lucky to have such a committed and passionate group of volunteers.”The event brought together individuals and representatives from local clubs, businesses and organisations and was attended by the Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alistair Cathcart.Looking ahead to an exciting year for Donaghadee in Bloom, Liz McWatters, DCDA committee member and keen horticulturist, outlined plans for 2025 – a landmark year in which Donaghadee will once again represent Northern Ireland in Britain in Bloom.  “Last time, we achieved a Gold Award – a remarkable accomplishment for a group making its first appearance,” said Liz. “Now, we want to build on that success in 2025, and we need all the help and support we can get. We’ll continue with the initiatives that have worked so well in the past, but we’re also looking ahead to new projects, including a Sensory Walk and the restoration of the wetland at Crommelin Wood. “We are especially grateful for the advice and support we receive from the Council’s Parks Department and look forward to working closely with them in the year ahead.”Mr Cathcart also praised the volunteers, highlighting the importance of collaboration.“The Donaghadee in Bloom programme shows what can be achieved when the council, community groups, residents, and businesses come together to take pride in the places where they live and work,” he said.“Their efforts create a better environment for everyone to enjoy, and I commend all those who have contributed to this outstanding initiative.  With 2025 set to be another exciting year for Donaghadee in Bloom, the commitment and enthusiasm of its volunteers remain at the heart of its success.”
