THERE were contrasting emotions for two of North Down’s top boxers at the Ulster Elite Finals in Belfast.
Garyn McAllister successfully defended the Ulster Elite 90kg title which he won last year, while Commonwealth medallist Eagleson was left disappointed as he narrowly missed out on a place in the final after a high quality semi-final contest with Paris Olympian Jude Gallagher.
McAllister faced a tough test in Thursday’s final against Anthony Taggart of Ormeau Road Boxing Club. After a closely contested opening round, the North Down fighter began to settle into his rhythm, using a strong, consistent jab and well-timed combinations to take control of the bout.
As the fight progressed, his pressure and work rate began to tell, with Taggart tiring under the sustained attacks. McAllister was rewarded for his display with a unanimous decision victory, underlining his status at the top of the weight division.
These Championships form a key part of the selection process for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and McAllister’s impressive recent performances will only boost his chances of representing Team NI on the international stage.
Eagleson was involved in a top-class semi-final bout against fellow Commonwealth gold medallist Jude Gallagher, with the Tyrone man ultimately being awarded the decision.
Despite the defeat, the Bangor fighter produced a strong performance against an elite level opponent. He will now take time to regroup, reflect on the experience and carefully consider his future moving forward.
Eagleson’s coach, Bogdan Tudoran, said: “We are so proud of Dylan who showed what a great boxer he is. His journey has just started and with the help of the right people, he will be one of the greatest.”
Gallagher went on to defeat Jordan O’Donnell in the 60kg final as he took a huge step towards selection for next year’s Games.
