EACH race day a competitive fleet of ‘fast dinghy’ sailors took to the water, eager to test themselves in a range of challenging conditions.
Most hoped for the preceding laser fleet start to be a general recall so that the double handers have clear air around the first lap, which unfortunately only happened twice during the series.
In addition to the established RS Aero, RS400, Laser 2000 and Phantom dinghies, this series saw an expanding list of designs to include an RS200, a GP14 and a Melges 15.
The various dinghy time handicaps no doubt gave the results officer a headache each week.
Entry numbers varied from week to week. In the majority there are between one and four RS400’s, one or two Laser 2000’s, between one and six RS Aero’s, and the sole representations of RS200, GP14, Phantom and Melges 15.
Overall winner of the fast dinghy fleet winter series was none other than BYC Commodore Rob Milligan in his RS Aero. Second were Robin Flannigan and Diane Burgess in a RS400.
Thank you to the on and off the water volunteers, committee and sponsors. And well done to all the sailors and their cheer squad for turning up each week. The competition and banter is mighty.
Sea swimming

Come and join us at the North slipway where you can swim a few metres from shore or as many laps you are comfortable with.
This is all while being supported by the rescue team aboard a RIB as well as volunteers on kayaks and paddle boards. Showers and change rooms are available.
- For Non BYC members, there is one open event per month for non members: June 2, July 7, August 4 and September 1.
- Cost is £10 per person per event to cover rescue support, hot showers and tea/ coffee. Or, sign up as a BYC member (excluding social membership) and enjoy more regular supported sea swimming:
- BYC members Adult Sea swimming will occur each Monday commencing May 5 until September 8 inclusive, with the following exceptions: July 14 and September 1.
- Open events for members and non members are: August 30: BYC swim, and December 26: Boxing Day swim.
