THE Open House Festival will dive into its extensive events programme with the return of the popular Pickie to Pier Swim event this July.

Marking the start of the arts charity’s bustling summer schedule, it will be the event’s sixth swim since it was reinstated in 2019 by Open House after a hiatus of over 30 years.

Taking place at 7pm on Friday, July 4, the swimming route will stay true to previous years, with participants starting at Skippingstone beach, heading to the tip of Eisenhower Pier, then looping back to the Pickie starting point.

Speaking of the logistics involved in coordinating the swim, Open House event organiser, Sharon Matchett, said there are ‘many variables’ to consider.

“We liaise with Safer Waters, We are Boat Folk at Bangor Marina, our local RNLI, and lots of other people who help with manning the course and running things on the ground, and of course tide times are a key factor,” she said.

“As it turned out, the best time for everyone involved was the first Friday evening of July, a great way to kick off the summer,” said Sharon.

The 2024 swim saw an all-female podium for the third consecutive year, with Jessika Robson from Hillsborough lifting the trophy for the third time. Katie O’Parka from Holywood was last year’s runner-up, and Kirsty Kee from Belfast came third.

“Of course, this event isn’t just about the winners,” Sharon said.

“It’s about the joy of taking part, the camaraderie, and the sense of achievement for the swimmers when they walk out of the water. Our final swimmer home will receive just as big a cheer as the winner will.”

To help the swimmers, there will be qualified safety crews, multiple course markings, and thorough safety briefings. Those taking part must wear tow floats, and the route will be supported in the water by kayaks, ribs and paddleboards.

Participants must be over 16 years of age, and confident, experienced swimmers who are capable of swimming 1000m within 30 minutes.
