NORTH Down Boxing Club has its first All Ireland champion.
Garyn McAllister was crowned the U-23 All Ireland champion at 90kgs during a stunning weekend in Dublin.
The local boxer fought in a semi-final bout on Friday, August 15 in the national stadium against the strong and durable Abel Ighbanour of Mount Tallant Boxing Club, winning by split decision. In the final the following day, Garyn put on a fantastic performance to win by unanimous decision against Destiny Ogedengbe of Rudiarius Boxing Club, Longford.
These championships form a basis for team selection to international competition later in the year and there are high hopes Garyn will be selected for the national squad.
Garyn, who travels from his home in Sandy Row, Belfast, to train in Bangor, is also part of Ulster’s high performance squad and will travel to Scotland at the end of the month for sparring and test matches.
