Giulia gunning for league title tilt with Ladies

BANGOR Ladies goalkeeper Giulia McLaughlin believes the Seasiders have what it takes to contend for the league title this term.

McLaughlin and co get their 2024 NIWFA Championship campaign underway in six days’ time when they travel to newly-promoted St Oliver Plunkett, and having recorded a third placed finish last season in what was their first venture into the division, the Bangor shot stopper is optimistic they can build on the success of 2023.

“We’re all feeling good this year. It’s great to have a lot of familiar faces back again, and to add a few new faces in as well,” she told the Spectator.

“We’re preparing for a title race this year and feeling confident in our abilities to compete for it.

“It’s definitely going to be a tough season ahead, but we’re up for the challenge and hope we can end the season in that top spot.”

An ever-present between the sticks last season, McLaughlin joined Bangor in their days as a Division 2 outfit and has become a core member of the group which now has their sights set on promotion to the Premiership.

Sion Swifts and Ballymena United could have something to say about that, with both sides being tipped for immediate returns to the top flight, while last season’s runners-up Ballyclare Comrades are also expected to be in the mix again.

But with Bangor able to call upon almost the same playing panel which helped them not only to finish third but also reach a cup final, it bodes well for what’s to come.

“It’s amazing to have retained the majority of the squad from last year,” added McLaughlin.

“We all know each other’s games and what motivates everyone to get the best out of the team.”

Back in February, Chris Dougan replaced former fan favourite Ethan Boylan in the managerial hot seat having previously served as his assistant, and that continuity is going to be key according to 25 year-old McLaughlin.

“I think it’s really important,” she said. “Chris was heavily involved within our setup last year and it’s good to have someone who knows us as a team, knows the club ethos and what our goals are, both for the season ahead and for the future.”
