A TEAM of golfers from Glenlola Collegiate in Bangor were crowned Junior Girls champions at the All-Ireland Schools Finals in Dublin at the end of last month.

Sophie Maidment and Lucy Morrison (both 15) and Lucy Yeates, 14, proved to be too good for the rest of the field in Milltown, coming out victorious to claim the title for the first time.

Their journey began after they won the Ulster Region qualifier, held at Bangor Golf Club on September 14, meaning they qualified for the All-Ireland Final on April 29 – where their total of 105 stableford points saw them storm to victory ahead of next-best Rainey Endowed.

Lucy Morrison added to the medal haul by winning the individual prize with an impressive 45 points.

All girls are working very hard studying for exams, which made finding time for golf difficult. An arrangement was made with the school which allowed the girls some much needed coaching from Gareth Graham, resident PGA Professional at Bangor Golf Club, over a four-week period.

The girls would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the support given from school, their parents, Bangor Golf Club and Bangor GC captains for the resources afforded to them and to the Mayor for taking time out to come and meet them.

Glenlola weren’t alone in enjoying success at the finals, with Rockport School’s Fin Eager taking home the Senior Boys title while the Rockport Senior Boys team finished second to Portmarnock CS.
