ONE of the borough’s oldest citizens has celebrated another milestone birthday.

Millisle woman, Eleanor Gunning, celebrated her 104th birthday at Mullaghboy Nursing Home in Donaghadee on Friday, complete with well-wishes from family and friends. Born in 1918, Eleanor celebrated her birthday at the nursing home where she has been a resident for the past three years, having spent her 100th birthday at home with her family.

Eleanor was joined in her birthday celebrations by her nephew, Tom Gunning, who looked after his aunt before her move to the nursing home on the January 4, 2019. Tom said: “She was very excited about celebrating her birthday today.” Eleanor spent her whole life at Windmill Road in Millisle. When asked what his aunt’s secret to a long life might be, Tom said: “She lived a quiet and honest life. She never drank or smoked and generally just tried to live a healthy life. “She worked hard and enjoyed going to Church every week. She is in great health at the minute – she is a bit hard of hearing and had a hip replacement in the ‘80s but apart from that is brave and healthy and doing really well.”
