HISTORIC Grey Point Fort in Helen’s Bay is set to be reopened to the public on Armed Forces Day and throughout the summer months.

Officials have confirmed the 20th century coastal fort will be open on June 21 to mark Armed Forces Day, following questions from North Down MP Alex Easton.

The Historic Environment Division (HED) has also stated the fort will be open at least once a week in July and August on Mondays, between 10am and 4pm.

The HED is due to carry out a feasibility study that will consider future options for the Fort that is due to be completed in the 2025/26 financial year.

The Fort was completed in 1907 with two six inch diameter guns which commanded the entrance to Belfast Lough. There are still two 23 feet long guns at the site and visitors can also see the original observation post and three searchlight positions.

Mr Easton welcomed the announcement that the Fort will be reopened to the public on a seasonal basis this summer.

“Grey Point Fort is a significant historical site in North Down, and I know many residents and visitors alike have long looked forward to seeing it accessible once again,” he said.

“It is excellent news that HED has already opened the fort for VE Day commemorations in May, and that it will also open for Armed Forces Day on June 21, with enhanced experiences being planned for that special occasion.”

Mr Easton added: “I welcome the announcement that a feasibility study is being procured to consider long-term options for the fort, with the aim of completion in the 2025/26 financial year. This is a positive step towards ensuring the future preservation and sustainable use of the site.

“I would encourage everyone to make use of these opening days over the summer, and I will continue to engage with the department to support the future of Grey Point Fort.”
