Calls for Parade and Knighthood as Rory McIlroy Completes Historic Career Grand Slam at The Masters
HOLYWOOD, NORTHERN IRELAND – Local politicians are calling for a hero’s welcome and a knighthood for Rory McIlroy after the Holywood-born golfer made history by winning the 2025 Masters and completing the prestigious career Grand Slam.
McIlroy’s dramatic win at Augusta National came after a thrilling playoff victory over England’s Justin Rose, with a birdie on the first extra hole securing his long-awaited Green Jacket. The triumph means McIlroy joins an elite group of just six golfers—Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, and Gene Sarazen—who have won all four of golf’s major championships.
Homecoming Parade Proposed for McIlroy in Holywood
North Down MP Alex Easton led calls for a celebratory homecoming parade in McIlroy’s hometown of Holywood.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Rory McIlroy on his phenomenal victory at the US Masters, completing the career Grand Slam and securing his place in the history books of world golf,” Easton said.
“This is a moment of immense pride for Northern Ireland. Rory’s journey—from Holywood Golf Club to the iconic greens of Augusta—has been one of dedication, resilience, and world-class talent.
“His achievements deserve to be recognised. A homecoming parade would allow the people of North Down, Holywood, and across Northern Ireland to express their pride and appreciation.”
Politicians Push for Knighthood Recognition
North Down MLA Alan Chambers echoed the praise and urged the UK government to honour McIlroy with a knighthood.
“Rory is not only a phenomenal golfer but also a true ambassador for Northern Ireland,” said Chambers.
“He’s stayed grounded and never forgotten his roots in Holywood. That’s why my party leader, Mike Nesbitt MLA, has formally written to the Prime Minister, recommending that Rory McIlroy be considered for a Knighthood in recognition of his exceptional sporting achievement.”
A Legacy Cemented in Golf History
Also praising McIlroy’s feat, North Down MLA Stephen Dunne highlighted the significance of joining golf’s most exclusive club.
“Rory’s win at Augusta puts him in elite company. Only six players in history have completed the Grand Slam, and now a young man from Holywood is one of them,” Dunne said.
“He’s long been a global ambassador for Northern Ireland and an inspiration to countless young athletes. His perseverance, despite past disappointments, has now led to sporting immortality.”
McIlroy’s career-defining moment has sparked celebrations across the country, with fans and public figures alike lauding the golfer’s dedication, talent, and contribution to sport. As momentum builds for official recognition, one thing is clear—Rory McIlroy has made Northern Ireland, and the world of golf, immensely proud.
