ROYAL Ulster Yacht Club are to host the IRC NI Championship later this summer.
The North Down club isued the Notice of Race and Entry Form for the IRC NI Championship to be held on July 19 and 20.
This is the first time this specific event will be held, and Northern Ireland joins the other UK Home Nations and the Republic of Ireland in hosting their own IRC Championship. The event will be hosted by Royal Ulster Yacht Club under the auspices of the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC).
Under a new initiative launched recently among major events/clubs bordering the Irish Sea, another new competition has been introduced, the Nations Cup; this event will see yachts from the home clubs in England, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland compete to earn points for their home nation.
The Nations Cup aims to revive the once vibrant Irish Sea racing scene with more yachts travelling to away events.
This year the IRC NI Championship will be the final leg of the Nations Cup, the other events being hosted in Pwllheli (Wales) and Tarbert, Loch Fyne (Scotland) both in May and Dun Laoghaire (Ireland) in early July.
Within minutes of the entries being open, several local boats had entered, the first being Michael Browne’s custom Dubois 33 ‘Victric’ from Royal North of Ireland YC/Strangford Lough YC followed rapidly by the O’Tiarnaigh/Harrington Mulholland IMX 38 ‘eXcession’ and Del & Gill Fairley’s Swan 36 ‘Lofna’ both from the host club.
We are fortunate to have the services of International Race Officer Bill O’Hara as our Principal Race Officer for the event ensuring the organisation on the water. will be of the highest standard.
Royal Ulster YC is looking forward to welcoming sailors from all around the Irish Sea to enjoy a weekend of high class racing and excellent hospitality.
