AN intrepid group of P7 pupils have put their best feet forward to reach the summit of Slieve Doan, in the Mourne Mountains, as part of the Kilcooley Connects project.

The trip to the mountains was the culmination of a year-long programme designed to enhance the pupils’ physical and emotional wellbeing.

The scheme is rooted in the Five Ways to Wellbeing – be active, take notice, give, keep learning, and connect – and aims to take learning beyond the classroom while prioritising the children’s health and wellbeing.

In preparation of their climb, the children took part in a wide range of activities aimed at developing their resilience, confidence, positive mindset and fitness.

The 20 strong group of pupils were accompanied by 30 adults, many of whom have supported the children throughout the year-long project.

P7 teacher Jonny Hall praised both those who completed the climb.

“It was truly inspiring to see the strength of relationships between our pupils and the adults supporting them. That sense of connection and belonging is fundamental to improving mental health and building stronger communities.”

Mr Hall said: “We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Ards and North Down Borough Council for funding the qualified instructors who supported us on the day.
