THROUGHOUT November, Bangor friends Corrie Leitch and Johanne Jefferson completed a daily dip in Groomsport to raise funds and awareness for childhood bereavement charity, Winston’s Wish.
Each swim lasted three-and-a-half minutes, chosen to reflect a sobering statistic: 3.5% of children aged five to 16 in the UK have experienced the death of a parent or sibling.
On days when the sea was too dangerous, the pair swapped waves for cold showers, never missing a day. Their efforts have already raised over £1,200, with hopes of reaching £1,500.
“Three and a half minutes in cold water, every day was challenging,” Corrie said, “but nothing compared to the struggles bereaved children face. It was worth every shiver.”
Winston’s Wish provides age-appropriate support for children and young people who have lost a parent, sibling, or important person. Since 1992, the charity has helped tens of thousands of children, and voluntary donations like these help ensure they can continue their vital work.
Johanne added: “If our challenge helps even one child get the support they need, every moment was worth it. The cold showers were far worse than getting in the sea so we were glad there were only 2 very stormy days when that was needed.”
