NORTH Down residents are being asked to share their ‘Memories of War’ as part of this year’s 79th Victory in Europe Day anniversary.
Each year VE Day is commemorated on May 8 to commemorate the date when Germany unconditionally surrendered to the allied forces of the Second World War.
Bangor Court House, now the headquarters of Open House, is hosting a special ‘Memories of War’ event, on Wednesday, May 8, from 11am to 3pm, in a bid to preserve the ‘invaluable memories’ held within the local community for future generations.
Gillian Robinson, of Robinson Goldsmiths, has jointly organised the event, which is also being billed as a digital collection day, inviting members of the public to share their personal wartime experiences as well as artefacts such as medals, ration books, letters and diaries.
Local residents can contribute to a digital archive, facilitated by NVTV, with a broadcast of the event to be uploaded to an online archive on NVTV’s website for global access.
There will also be light refreshments, music and contributions from North Down Museum and the NI War Museum as the event celebrates the sacrifices and resilience of those who lived through this historic era.
Gillian Robinson appealed to local residents and those further afield to share their memories.
“We believe it is essential to capture and preserve the memories of those who lived through World War II,” she said.
”Through Memories of War we aim to create a lasting tribute to their courage and resilience, ensuring that their stories are not forgotten.
“Memories of War encourages the community to share both ordinary and extraordinary war-related stories and objects, fostering a deeper understanding of this pivotal period in history.
“The event will provide a platform for attendees to share their wartime experiences, reflect on the significance of VE Day, and contribute to the collective memory of the community.
“By engaging with the stories and artefacts of the elderly generation, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the impact of war on individuals and communities alike, and help honour the heroic individuals who shaped our history.”
Alison Gordon, of Open House, urged the local community to support the event.
“We are honored to host this community event celebrating VE Day and paying tribute to the older generation,” she said.
“At the Court House, we firmly believe that community and business are intertwined, and we are committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen our community fabric.
“We would love members of the community to join us at the Court House as we come together to commemorate VE Day. We want to ensure that the sacrifices and memories of older people are preservedfor future generations to learn from and cherish.”
There is free entry to the event at the Court House, at 16 Quay Street, but pre-booking is essential as limited spaces are available. Members of the public are asked not to bring weapons or dangerous items, including gas masks, to ensure the safety of all participants.
