A MILLISLE couple hope to transform a community building through their ‘Paint It Forward’ event in May.
Danielle and Gerard Donaghy are calling for nominations of deserving charities and organisations who are in need of a little sprucing up.
Parents to two daughters aged 10 and seven, the couple run Paintworks NI and Paintworks NI Academy.
Last year Paintworks NI ran its Paint It Forward initiative for the first time and with the help of a team of volunteers, they transformed Helping Hands Autism Resource Centre in Dundonald, inside and out.
Hoping to do the same again this year on May 30, they have brought together a team of tradespeople to give a local organisation a much-needed glow-up, free of charge.
More than 30 painters and suppliers have signed up for this year’s event and Paintworks NI is now seeking nominations from the Northern Ireland public for local charities and organisations in need of this vital support.
“As a parent to a disabled child, we are acutely aware of how little funding many support services receive – and how vital they are to the families who rely on them,” Gerard said.
“This could be a charity of any description, a special needs school or support service, a community centre, a homeless support service, a mental health organisation, a kids’ or disability sports team – this initiative is open to all.”
“Organising this event was our way of giving back to some unsung heroes who give so much of themselves, but ask for nothing in return,” Gerard added.
Last year, local businesses supplied food and suppliers Axus Décor, Crown Paints and Johnstones Paints backed the event: Crown and Johnstones donated all of the paint products required for the project, while Axus Décor supplied all of the sundries and tools.
Walls were repaired and repainted, colours were thoughtfully chosen to create a calming, sensory-friendly environment for service users and the exterior of the Dundonald building was given a new colourful lease of life.
“The impact was profound,” said Danielle. “The charity now welcomes its families into a bright, welcoming space that reflects the dignity of the people who rely on it. Staff and service users were overwhelmed – not just by the transformation, but by the fact that so many tradespeople had come together purely to give something back and do good for others.”
Gerard added: “Paint It Forward isn’t just a painting event. It’s a movement – a chance for us, as decorators, to give back using the skills we use daily, but often take for granted. It’s about helping those who need it, painting spaces that matter and showing that our trade is more than just brushes and rollers.
“We have the power to lift others up – with colour, with community, with action. It’s about unity in the trade, pride in what we do, and remembering that this job isn’t just about making money – it’s about leaving a lasting mark on our community. Together.”
Nominations close on Sunday, March 8. To nominate, email: paintitforward@paintworksni.com with the following information: Information about the building to include photos where possible, its purpose and why it is deserving, and its size and location..
