Mixed fortunes for Holywood

Holywood 91 (5) Donaghadee B 79 (2)

Antrim Lawn 82 (4) Holywood 71 (3)

A HOME win against Donaghadee B and a loss at Antrim earned a total of eight points and moved Holywood into third place in NIBA Division 3A.

The five points from the Donaghadee match were largely due to a 19-shot win by Trevor Roberts’ rink. Although their advantage of 27 shots after 15 ends was narrowed by the visitors over the closing six ends, the cushion built up earlier proved decisive. Brian McCoy’s four also came out on top, finishing 10 shots up, while the other two rinks went down by seven and 10 shots respectively.

On the tricky synthetic surface at Antrim, Holywood finished ahead on three rinks by a combined total of just six shots. However, with the fourth rink falling to a 17-shot defeat, the overall win went to the home side by a margin of 11.

The Seapark side will reach the halfway mark in their league programme with a visit to 1st Ballymacarrett on Saturday.

Dungannon 71 (5.5)

Holywood 32 (0.5)

HOLYWOOD’S ladies fell to defeat in their away match against Dungannon on Monday, June 5.

The weather at Dungannon was hot and sunny while the green was fast with quite a few bowls ending up in the ditch.

Three rinks were played with one team going on a lady short due to injury, which meant playing as a three with two players playing an extra bowl each. As this is seen as an advantage, that team loses 25% of overall shots at the match end.

On the final end for Holywood’s valiant three, there was a calliper measure with the final shot being awarded by a whisker to Dungannon and the result for that rink being a draw.
