A NORTH Down MLA has praised the work of volunteers from the Simon Community’s Bangor branch.
DUP Assemblyman Stephen Dunne was speaking after meeting with charity members following a visit to the branch at Central Avenue.
Founded in 1971, the Simon Community is dedicated to aiding those who are homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless. It has grown into the largest charity of its kind in the province, providing 470 beds across 20 temporary accommodation centres across NI.
Like many of their other branches, the Central Avenue centre provides service users with accommodation, as well as addiction, tenancy and health and well-being support.
Mr Dunne said: “I was pleased to meet with senior representatives of the Simon Community in Bangor to discuss their very valuable ongoing work within the local area.
“Locally, the organisation supports individuals experiencing homelessness, offering 26 beds each night in Central Avenue.
“This meeting was a welcome opportunity to discuss ways the Simon Community works with statutory and voluntary bodies to help eradicate homelessness across our local area.
“They work to support those who are struggling to prevent them from entering into homelessness in the first place.
“There are many complex reasons why someone is made homeless, and it is encouraging that there is support out there, and it’s important that people know that help is at hand.
“I am committed to working with organisations such as the Simon Community to address the root causes of homelessness. I would like to commend the staff and volunteers at the charity for their continued positive work within the local community.
“I look forward to supporting them further in the future through my role as an MLA. I would encourage anyone who is struggling with their housing situation to avail of their services by using their Homeless Support Line which operates 24/7 at 0800 171 2222,” added the MLA.
