MORE PETROL BOMB ATTACKS TAKE PLACE IN LOCAL TOWNS

TENSIONS within a small Newtownards housing estate remain high after petrol bombs were hurled at a house in the early hours of Tuesday.

Detectives are appealing for information following a report of a number of devices being thrown at a property in the Weavers Grange area of the town, at around 4.30am on May 2.

The incident is understood to have involved a dark coloured vehicle and follows the torching of a car in the estate the previous day.

Police said a petrol bomb was thrown at a car parked in the driveway of a property in the area at around 1am on Monday.

Just minutes earlier, another car was targeted in Ballywalter, being set alight in the Main Street.

Local police have not linked any of the incidents to the recent feud between rival drugs gangs in the Ards and North Down area, however, officers are investigating a number of lines of enquiry.

Inspector Hanna said: “At approximately 12.55am, we received a report that a car had been set alight and destroyed in the Main Street area of Ballywalter.

“At approximately 1am, we received a second report that a petrol bomb had been thrown at a car parked in the driveway of a property in the Weavers Grange area of Newtownards.

“It is extremely fortunate that no one was injured in what can only be described as reckless attacks that could have resulted in more serious consequences.

“Both incidents are being treated as arson and officers are investigating a number of lines of enquiry in relation to the fires,” he said.

Detectives are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incidents or has CCTV of the areas in question or dash cam footage to contact them on 101.
