PRETTY pooches lined up with their best paws poised to win over the judges in Donaghadee Methodist Church’s Pup Idol competition.

Dogs of all shapes, sizes, colours and breeds were shampooed, brushed and coiffed to look their best for the weekend event judged by local MLA, Peter Martin.

Everything from diminutive poodles to a mighty Bernese mountain dog were on their best behaviour to vie for the best in the show ribbon.

After much deliberation, the best – and coincidentally, the oldest – in show, was selected as Alfie the terrier, owned by Kelly Norwood.

Hank, the Bernese, shown by Isla McFarland, clinched second place with Ava Daniels’ doxiepoo, Baxter coming third.

The church competition was supported by J Wright and Sons Butchers and the Old Manor Mill, with the assistance of the Donaghadee Community Development Association.

Mr Martin congratulated the organisers for the event which created ‘great community atmosphere and some healthy competition’.

The competition featured ten categories, ranging from puppies to rescue dogs and even ‘the dog most like its owner’.

Mr Martin added: “The overall winner was perhaps the oldest dog there, Alfie, at an impressive 12 and-a-half, so there is hope for us all! My thanks to the Rev. Louise McKee for hosting the event and giving me a hand with the judging.

“It was a brilliant morning. Thank you to everyone who helped organise it and brought along their prize pooches.”
