GET set for a celebration of sea, sport, community and creativity with the return of the popular Donaghadee Summer Festival.
Young and older people alike can look forward to over 100 events from equestrian displays to American Flag Football and live music with entertainment at the town’s harbour and seafront area, from June 20 to September 9.
Organised by Donaghadee Community Development Association (DCDA), the eagerly anticipated summer festival brings together an array of local groups, organisations, volunteers and sponsors with a host of music, arts, heritage and family entertainment events.
The festival will be officially launched next week on Donaghadee RNLI Open Day, Saturday, June 20 – by Mayor Craig Blaney, when members of the public are able to meet Donaghaee lifeboat crew members and enjoy stalls, food and fun.
Some of the festival highlights include the arrival of a ‘town cryer’ who will make a special appearance in Donaghadee town centre on Saturday, June 13 at noon before becoming a familiar figure throughout the Summer Festival.
Visitors and residents are being invited to step back in time to 1778 with a dramatic performance of ‘America’s On the Water’ on Sunday, July 5, written by the Valhalla Street Theatre group from Newtownards.
Created to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the story unfolds as American colonists, under the command of Captain Paul Jones, sailed into Donaghadee’s waters aboard a man-of-war, sparking conflict off the local coast.
Performed on the pier, this lively production blends rich historical detail with humour, bringing a story to life that was over 250 years in the making.
The All-Ireland American Flag Football League comes to Donaghadee Rugby Club on Saturday, August 8, when 12 teams from across Ireland will take part in a major competition for one of the country’s fastest-growing sports.
The event will be hosted by the North Down Dragons and will feature an all-American-style barbecue and live music, creating a festival atmosphere for competitors and spectators.
American Flag Football is governed by American Football Ireland and North Down Dragons support the sports development through women’s taster sessions, youth programmes and community outreach initiatives.
The fourth Ulster Fry World Championship returns with a sizzling competition on Saturday, August 15, when celebrity chef Jenny Bristow judges this much-loved event, bringing her trademark warmth, humour and passion for local food.
Sunday afternoons will come to life thanks to a series of band concerts at Lemon’s Wharf on August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Local bands will perform a lively mix of classic favourites and modern hits.
Set against the beautiful harbour setting, these open-house performances offer the perfect opportunity to unwind and enjoy an afternoon of music.
The Summer Artisan Market will be held on Saturday, August 29 and will feature a wide range of stalls offering everything from handcrafted goods and artisan products.
The popular Horse Relay will also be held on Saturday, August 29, bringing thrilling action to the festival. Organised by Gransha Equestrian, this exciting event is one of the festival’s highlights and attracts large crowds each year.

“Highlights include the North Down Dragons hosting the Ireland Flag Football League at Donaghadee Rugby Football Club alongside a lively all-American barbecue event for all the family.
“We are also delighted to introduce new attractions including ‘Drama on the Pier’, the return of the ever popular horse relay, an exciting new market, and the welcome addition of our new town cryer, helping bring even more colour and character to the festival.
“Visitors can also step into the television drama of Hope Street through a special walking tour exploring familiar filming locations around Donaghadee. Thank you to all our volunteers, organisers, and sponsors who make the festival possible.”
