THE end of the school term at Rathmore Primary was marked by a poignant celebration as the school community gathered to honour Mrs Karen Morrow.
After 36 years of dedicated service as a cleaner, Karen has become an integral thread in the fabric of the Bangor school’s history.
Her retirement marks the conclusion of a career that spanned nearly four decades, during which she became a familiar, friendly face to countless pupils and staff.
It was an emotional morning as principal Julie Hardy paid tribute to Karen’s ‘gentle impact’. Mrs Hardy recounted how Karen’s kindness has touched generations of children and colleagues who have walked the Rathmore corridors since 1989 – including Karen’s own grandchildren, who now attend the school.
The assembly was filled with personal touches including handmade tributes from children in every year group, who also presented Karen with bespoke cards, heartfelt messages and cards.
During a rendition of the school song, ‘Together,’ the room was moved as Karen’s grandson, Leo, stepped forward to present her with flowers and a hug.
“The entire Rathmore community expressed their gratitude for Karen’s unwavering loyalty and incredible service,” said a school spokeswoman.
“She leaves behind a legacy of hard work and warmth that will be greatly missed by everyone at the school.
“As she hangs up her mop, the school wishes Karen a retirement filled with health and joy, spent with her family and friends and, most importantly, enjoying the novelty of well-deserved term-time holidays.”
