THE appointment of a new GP contractor to Silverbirch Medical Practice has been welcomed as ‘excellent news’ for its 2,700 patients after several weeks of uncertainty.
North Down MLA Alan Chambers has received confirmation from Health Minister Mike Nesbitt that the replacement contractor had formally accepted the new contract which will begin on June 1st.
This latest development comes just weeks after Dr Steven Kinnear, who has provided care to the community for nearly a decade, announced he would stop providing medical services from May 31.
The new appointment follows a process led by the Strategic Planning and Performance Group (SPPG), including engagement with practice staff, communication with patients and a competitive recruitment process.
Interviews for the position were held on March 31, with a preferred candidate identified and the successful contractor has now confirmed their acceptance of the contract. Welcoming the appointment, Mr Chambers said: “This is excellent news for patients in Bangor who rely on Silverbirch Medical Practice.
“From the outset, my priority has been to ensure there would be no disruption to vital GP services, and I am pleased that a new contractor has now formally accepted the contract.”
The UUP health spokesman added: “I liaised closely with the Minister and health officials throughout this process to emphasise the importance of securing a stable and timely outcome. This result reflects that collaborative effort and the commitment to protecting frontline services.”
“Patients were informed of the contract transition in March, and further updates will be issued as formal documentation is finalised and signed in the coming weeks.”
Mr Chambers said: “I want to thank the outgoing GP for his service to the community and reassure patients that arrangements are firmly in place to maintain high-quality care.
This outcome provides certainty and stability moving forward.
“I understand the transition process will now move to completion of contractual formalities, after which patients will be formally notified of the new contract holder. This is a very positive outcome for patients and for primary care right across North Down.”
