FROM teenage student nurse to deputy Sister embarking on retirement, Sharon Mohan has enjoyed a remarkable career with the South Eastern Health Trust.

She was aged just 17 when she began her nursing career at Bangor Hospital, later moving to Ards Hospital as an enrolled nurse.

She worked hard to advance her qualifications until she attained her nursing degree.

Much of her 40 year career in nursing has been spent at the Ulster Hospital, where she has earned the respect of both patients and colleagues.

Sharon worked for a time in Ward 13, a general medicine ward, but it was in haematology Ward 4 that she truly found her calling.

When the ward later moved to Ward 6A in the new inpatient ward block, Sharon continued to provide care for her haematology and gastroenterology patients.

In 2017, she took up position as deputy Sister, a role she has held ever since, further contributing to the well-being of her patients.

Reflecting on her long and fulfilling career, Sharon said: “There have been many changes over the years and while it hasn’t always been easy, there have been good times, hard times and plenty of fun.

“I cannot imagine having done anything else other than nursing.”

Ward manager, Alanda Kelly, expressed her gratitude for Sharon’s contributions. “Sharon has been more than just a colleague, she has been a friend and mentor to many.

“Her commitment to her patients is truly commendable.

“Sharon takes on new challenges with grace and handles everything she does with kindness and dignity. In moments of vulnerability, she has been a guiding light to others.

“She will be sorely missed by everyone, but leaves us with a remarkable example of what a nurse should truly be.”
