DANSKE BANK SCHOOLS CUP

SULLIVAN UPPER 17 BELFAST ROYAL ACADEMY 20

SULLIVAN Upper saw their Schools’ Cup campaign come grinding to a halt last Saturday morning as Belfast Royal Academy edged a closely contested quarter-final in Holywood.BRA, who claimed the scalp of Methodist College in the round of 16, took a 7-0 lead after 10 minutes when Jayden Irwin touched down for a try which was converted by Conor McVicker. This became 10-0 for the north Belfast school when McVicker was on point with a penalty kick.Last year’s semi-finalists Sullivan responded with a try from Nathan Noble, converted by Hamish Johnston, to leave the scoreboard reading 7-10 at the interval.Ten minutes into the second half, Sullivan took the lead for the first time in the game. A Jack Law try, converted by Johnston, brought the home side into a 14-10 lead. But back came BRA with a try from Caleb McWhinney, the extras added by McVicker, to move in front again at 17-14.A second penalty from McVicker increased the BRA lead to 20-14 and while Hamish Johnston clawed three points back for Sullivan with a penalty of their own, the Holywood school were left on the losing side when the whistle sounded.
