Ulster Cup team breeze into quarter finals

CLAYTON Pike’s Ulster Cup team continued their progress with a fine 4.5-1.5 victory against Banbridge Golf Club last Sunday.

The match was evenly contested at both venues but ultimately the Bangor side stepped up a gear on the back nine holes to claim the victory. There were victories on the day for Kevin Doyle, Ethan Boylan, Ricky Dorman and Paul Murray; Mark Winters game was called in down the stretch whilst Aaron Preston narrowly lost out on the 18th.

The team is carrying some momentum, and now faces Belvoir Park GC in the quarter final in the coming weeks.

On the Men’s side, Paul Corns, with a nett 63, was the overall winner of the July monthly medal held last weekend at the club. The runner up was Michael Osborne on nett 64, who topped Division 1 from Mike Davis, nett 68 and Jamie Stewart, nett 69.

The Division 2 winner was Patrick O’Doherty, nett 67, winning on the countback from both Zach McKee and Damien McAlorum who were second and third respectively. Brent Cunningham, nett 66, claimed the Division 3 prize from David Gray, Nett 67, and Steve Cheung on nett 68.

The best gross was 71 by Jack Owens. Michael McComb won the weekend yellow stableford with 44 points. Division 1 was won by Ryan Bowman with 42 points, Division 2 by Jonathan Duncan 39 points and Division 3 by Drew Getty on 40 points. The nine hole stableford winner was John Birch on 20 points.

The Ladies Section July monthly medal was also held last week and it was Brooke Stranaghan who emerged the overall winner with a Nett 71.

Sophie Maidment, with nett 72, topped the Division 1 score, two shots ahead of Barbara Fox on nett 74. Joy Hamilton pipped Marie-Claire McCullough in Division 2 with a better back nine score, both ladies posting Nett 73s.

The Division 3 winner was Rosemary Lightbody, also nett 73, and three ahead of Patricia Campton on nett 76. The nine hole stableford winner was Bridget Wood with 19 points.
