After a career rubbing shoulders with celebrities in New York City, Elizabeth was ready for a new challenge and keen to move back home to Northern Ireland. When an opportunity to take over Bangor bar The Winning Post came her way, Elizabeth leapt at the prospect – and spotting its prime location on King’s Street with views of the Quay, aptly renamed it, ‘The King’s Quay.’
Growing up in Dunmurry, Elizabeth pursued a nursing degree on leaving school. A move to New York for a year out became twenty years in the city’s West Village, working for celebrity hairstylist, Oribe, where she looked after A-Listers such as Jennifer Lopez and Naomi Campbell. When Oribe moved to Miami, Elizabeth was headhunted to be a personal assistant by three famous names, and after choosing to work with Naomi Campbell, stayed with her for two years as her PA.
Home was calling, and in 2014 she returned to Belfast, buying a property in Upper Crescent. This huge terrace building was five offices, which she converted into a fabulous luxury home. While looking for her next project she came across The Winning Post, recognising its potential she loved the idea, having worked at events with friends in New York, she had the experience in the hospitality industry and the knowledge and confidence to take it on.
Work on the King’s Quay got underway quickly, with a complete refurb of its exterior, with new windows and a black and cream paint job to represent Irelands famous pint of Guinness. Inside, new bathrooms and a fresh paint job have kick started Elizabeth’s grand plans for the interior, but she is taking it slowly so no major changes disrupt the clientele. She relaunched the bar almost a year ago, and regulars have remained along with many new faces to enjoy the blazing fire and warm welcoming staff.
Having recently gained an entertainment licence, she has a great line up of local bands- Irish, folk and jazz musicians booked for the coming weeks as well as Belfast based instrumental duo ‘String Ninjas’ who are not to be missed on 22nd December. Alongside this, Elizabeth has a host of regular events planned, such as ‘Wine Not’ Wednesdays… The bar also has a digital duke box, pool table and 3 TV screens – Rugby is usually the sport of choice.
Family and friends are involved in the business along with sister Biasa and nephew Casey behind the bar.
There is no doubt that under Elizabeth’s capable leadership, enthusiasm and warmth, the King’s Quay has become one of Bangor’s most popular bars which recently won Hospitality of the year at the Bangor Business Awards 2024. Why not call in for a refreshing pint, glass of wine and a bit of craic.
PS: Fur babies extremely welcome!
